Wellbutrin (generic name is Bupropion) is an atypical antidepressant used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD), seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and to assist with smoking cessation. It works differently than common SSRIs by inhibiting the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine, which can improve energy, motivation, and mood without causing weight gain or sexual dysfunction.
Wellbutrin is available in extended-release (XL) and sustained-release (SR).
HOW IT WORKS
Unlike popular antidepressants that target serotonin, Wellbutrin works by increasing the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. This mechanism is particularly helpful for people experiencing symptoms like extreme fatigue, concentration difficulties, and lack of motivation.
HOW TO TAKE
Wellbutrin XL (Extended-Release) has to be taken once daily; typically used for long-term management of depression.
Wellbutrin SR (Sustained-Release) has to be taken twice daily; often used for depression or smoking cessation.
Tablets should be swallowed whole; they should not be crushed or chewed.
Many people start to notice improvements in energy levels within 1 - 2 weeks, but full antidepressant effects typically develop over 4 - 6 weeks.
SIDE EFFECTS
While generally well-tolerated, side effects can include dry mouth, insomnia or trouble sleeping, nausea or constipation, headache or migraine, agitation or anxiety (especially early in treatment), tinnitus (ringing in the ear).
WARNING AND PRECAUTIONS
Wellbutrin should not be taken if you have a seizure disorder, eating disorders (like anorexia or bulimia), or if you are suddenly stopping the use of alcohol, benzodiazepines, or sedative medications.
Do not take Wellbutrin if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) in the last 14 days.
Some individuals may experience increased anxiety, agitation, or suicidal thoughts, particularly when starting the medication.
